Classic ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ muscle cars rolled into Topeka, Kansas, on a special run to visit Tai, the famous movie star elephant! See highlights from this unique event.

The streets of Topeka saw a very unusual sight this past weekend. A group of classic cars, looking just like the famous Trans Am from the movie “Smokey and the Bandit,” rolled into town. But their stop wasn’t for a typical car show. They came to visit a real movie star: Tai, the beloved elephant.
The event brought big smiles to many faces. Car fans and animal lovers gathered for this special get-together.
The muscle car run started several days ago. Owners of Pontiac Trans Ams and other 1970s cars dressed up like characters from the popular “Smokey and the Bandit” film. Some even wore cowboy hats, just like Burt Reynolds’ character, the Bandit. They drove from a nearby state, making stops along the way. Their goal was to recreate a fun, carefree road trip, just like in the movie.
Their final destination was a private animal sanctuary just outside Topeka. This is where Tai, the famous elephant, lives. Tai has been in many movies and TV shows over the years. She is known for being very calm and friendly. After years in Hollywood, she now enjoys a peaceful life. The sanctuary provides a safe and happy home for her and other animals.
When the roaring cars pulled up, Tai seemed curious. Her keepers were there to make sure everyone was safe. The car owners parked their shiny vehicles nearby. They got out to admire Tai. They waved and took many pictures. Tai, in turn, gently swayed and watched the new arrivals.
“This is just amazing,” said Mark Johnson, who drove his black Trans Am all the way from Missouri. But getting to meet a real movie star elephant? That’s something you won’t forget.”
Another driver, Susan Davies, added, “Tai is just beautiful. This was definitely worth the drive.”
The visit was not for a big public event. It was a more private gathering, arranged by the car enthusiasts and the sanctuary staff. It was a chance for the car group to enjoy their hobby in a new way. It also brought some extra attention to Tai and her sanctuary.
The unique meeting ended with more photos and waves. The “Smokey and the Bandit” cars roared back onto the highway. But the memory of their special stop in Topeka, meeting a real movie star elephant, will last a long time.
